But when everyone counts on you, letting go feels less like relief and more like a risk. This article is about what holds you back, and what letting go really means.

Sunday evening. You go over the week’s to-do list. You redo a colleague’s presentation “because it’ll be quicker”. You check that your child’s sports bag is packed, that your mother’s appointment is in the calendar, that nobody has forgotten Tuesday’s birthday.

Someone sees you and says, kindly: “You should just let go.”

You’d love to. Really. But a small voice answers straight away: “And if I don’t do it, who will?”

If you are one of the people everyone counts on, this scene probably feels familiar. Letting go is everywhere: in books, magazines, meditation apps. And yet, for you, it often stays one more piece of advice you can’t manage to follow.

Why “just let go” doesn’t work

The advice comes from a good place. But it assumes that letting go is a decision: you press a button and the tension disappears.

It doesn’t work like that. Nobody decides to stop being afraid, or to stop feeling responsible. If it were a matter of willpower, you would have done it already, because willpower is something you have plenty of.

Worse, the advice adds another task to your list. Now you have to carry everything and also succeed at letting go. When you can’t, you blame yourself. People who are very demanding of themselves know this trap well: even rest becomes a performance.

Finally, “just let go” often sounds like “stop worrying so much”. As if the way you are were an excess to be corrected. But what makes you hold everything together is not a flaw.

What control protects

You are reliable. Responsible. Attentive to what others need, often before they know it themselves. These are real qualities, and they are why people count on you.

But a quality pushed too far ends up turning against you. Reliability becomes “I carry everything, even what isn’t mine to carry”. A sense of responsibility becomes “I do things for others instead of delegating”.

Behind this need to hold everything together, there is often a quieter fear. The fear that things will fall apart. The fear that someone will be disappointed, or struggling, because of you. Sometimes, deeper still, the fear of no longer being useful, and so of no longer mattering.

Control is a form of protection. It has probably served you well, and it still does. That’s why you can’t drop it on command: you don’t take off a protection until you feel safe without it.

So nothing in you is broken. The way you are has good reasons to exist. It just takes up too much room, and it costs you more and more: tiredness, irritability, the feeling of carrying everything alone.

Letting go doesn’t mean dropping everything

For the people everyone counts on, letting go doesn’t mean becoming indifferent or abandoning others. It means discovering, little by little, that things hold together, even without you.

In practice, it looks like this: you let a colleague finish their presentation, even if you would have done it differently. You don’t remind your teenager three times about practice. You let a silence settle instead of offering your help right away.

And then something happens inside you. Often it isn’t pleasant: a tightness in your chest, an urge to step in, a bit of guilt. That’s normal. Letting go starts with feeling this discomfort, instead of silencing it by taking control again. I talk about this in more detail in the article “Suffer Less by No Longer Running From What You Feel”.

Then, most of the time, nothing serious happens. Your colleague manages. Your teenager copes, or forgets, and learns. Someone else offers to help. And you discover that you can take care of others without carrying everything for them.

A simple place to start: the next time you hear yourself say “Leave it, I’ll take care of it”, pause for a second and ask yourself: “What am I afraid will happen if I don’t?” You don’t have to change anything yet. Noticing is already a first step.

What others gain too

When you hold everything together, others get used to you holding everything together. It’s not ill will on their part: it’s simply the place you occupy, and they organise themselves around it.

In a team, the manager who takes back every file sends a message without meaning to: “I don’t trust you to manage.” Team members wait, double-check, stop daring to decide. And the load comes back, again, to the person who holds everything.

At home, it’s the same. If you are always the one who thinks of everything, nobody else learns to think of it. Your loved ones are no less capable than you. They’ve just never needed to be.

Letting go a little also means making room. Others get the chance to make mistakes, to learn, to show you they can. The relationship becomes more balanced: you are no longer only the person who helps, you also become someone who can be helped.

And you may discover something unexpected: people don’t love you only for what you do. They love you even when you don’t do everything.

To conclude

Letting go isn’t a feat to accomplish, or a personality trait you either have or don’t. It is a capacity that grows with practice, as you find that you can trust others, and yourself.

What does it look like at the end of the road? You are still there for others. But you choose what you carry. You let others do their share. You rest without waiting for everything to be finished. And you can count on yourself, even when everyone counts on you.

This path is easier with support, because it’s hard to see on your own what holds you back. If you recognise yourself in this article, I invite you to start with an exploration session: together, we’ll look at what you are carrying today, and what you could begin to set down.

Article written with the help of AI.

People tell you to “just let go”, as if it were a switch.
